The Bump app on my iPhone.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could exchange contact info at Rootstech without worrying about business cards?

Wouldn't it be nice if I took this awesome photo at Rootstech & I was able to share it with you quickly and almost effortlessly?

Wouldn't it be nice if I could, like, quickly share with you at Rootstech this great app that could help you find more of your dead people efficiently so you don't have to find it online to download?

Wouldn't it be nice if I could quickly share with you at Rootstech an event from my calendar?

Wouldn't it be nice if we could quickly connect on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn?

Guess what!?! We can With the Bump App. Take a look:

Did you see how happy everyone was when they Bumped? I wanna be that happy at Rootstech. Don't you? I want to Bump at Rootstech. Don't you? I've had it on my iPhone since right after I first bought my iPhone, but I noticed at our conferences nobody Bumps. Why don't we Bump? Don't we want to be happy at Rootstech like they are in the Bump video? [Bump. Smile.]

The Bump app is available for the iPhone, iPhone Touch, iPad, and Android. Now, not all the newest features of the Bump app are on the Android version, but they're working on that. The contact info is definitely on there.

And? An iPhone can Bump with an Android phone too. That's right the Bumping is cross platform.

And? It's free.

Is this basically the same thing as the Bluetooth I have on my blackberry?

Technically? Yes and no. Bump does not use Bluetooth technology.

Bluetooth technology enables [in this situation] a Bluetooth enabled device to exchange contact information, photos, etc with another Bluetooth enabled device that is located roughly within a 30 foot radius of each other using low-frequency radio waves. Generally, a Bluetooth user will find the contact that they'd like to share with someone else, find the person who has Bluetooth enabled on their phone to transfer to and who is within the 30ft radius. Through the technology the devices authenticate and the information is sent.

The Bump app uses cloud technology. Basically, here's the rundown of their process of exchanging info: A user of a smartphone that has downloaded the Bump app selects either contact info, music, another app, photo, calendar events, send invites to events, connect on twitter, facebook, or linkedin. Holding the phone in their hand they slightly bump the hand of someone else that is holding their smartphone that also has the app downloaded. Each phone sends location info to the Bump servers. Based on this location info, the servers determine what 2 devices are wanting to exchange info, and then the exchange occurs over their servers.

Therefore, yes, information is being exchanged, but what kinds of information that can be exchanged and the technology that handles the exchange are different.

Additionally, with the Bump app, as long as a match can be determined through twitter, facebook, or linkedin, a virtual bump can be done as well with an exchange of information.

The Bump app also has a chat feature within it as well and people who have connected twitter, facebook and linked can use chat.

I forgot to add that when using the Bump app, a user can later send info through the app with a contact that they've bumped with already. So, say for example, I bumped contact info with someone at a conference [or a group of people] and I later wanted to send them a photo or a calendar event, then I can send it to them through the app.

Using Bluetooth technology, this can be done as well through the smartphone itself in various ways [email, text, etc.].

Can't wait for RootsTech-2012 and thank you for this Blog post. I have my Droid loaded, but can't find the iPad2 APP. The Bump website talks about iPad, but not iPad2. I wonder it that is why I can't find it in the APP store.

I did some looking around in forums concerning Bump and the iPad. I got the impression that there isn't a separate app for the iPad. That it's the same app. I also saw that people had used it on their iPad2. Did you try looking through iTunes as well? Just a thought.

Caroline, I not only have been looking forward to meeting you, but now will also have the thrill of bumping with you as well! I have had the app for quite a while, but already had so many contacts in my phone that I haven't even remembered to try it. And yes Nancy I totally remember the bump from my disco youth.
