  • Mocavo has discovered a very handy byproduct to their handwriting detection technology -- Photo Detection in Historical Documents. [Handy and dandy.]
  • Readdle's Documents app's latest update integrates with the rest of their productivity apps and on the iDownload Blog, Lori gives a great review of it and the new integration. [I also talk about Readdle's productivity apps in my blog post 39 iPad Productivity Apps for Genealogy.]
  • From Engadget: Google Hangouts for iOS has been updated. [I'm liking the redesign. Looks a lot better on my iPad, IMO.]
  • Confused about newspaper obituaries and copyright? On Genealogy's Star, James makes some very good points about it.

  • Also on Genealogy's Star, James explains how you can find your ancestor's land patent.
  • Yesterday, Ancestry.com added 2 new databases to their subscription collection for New Mexico; updated indexing for an already existing 3rd party site for South Carolina; and added to an already existing database of theirs for Australia.
  • Genealogy Trails volunteer contributors recently uploaded various types of records and information for various counties in the following US states: Delaware, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Georgia. Their African American Genealogy page also had some recent updates.
  • USGenWeb volunteer contributors uploaded 86 files yesterday of various types of records and information for various counties in the following US states: Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia.

  • Findmypast has released their new app, I Once Was, for iPhone users. Definitely something for researchers to share with their family, especially the younger ones, to kinda get them interested or thinking about their family history. Folks, this could be your tool to get them interested. Oh, and genealogical societies? Hello. This is definitely something to leverage for your membership and potential members. While not optimized for the iPad, you can certainly download it there and use it. It's fun. And who doesn't like fun?

  • Performing African American Research? On Upfront with NGS, guest contributor Sharon Leslie Morgan shares some of the African American research modules they will have at their upcoming conference; Angela Walton-Raji has some very helpful research resources on her latest African Roots Podcast; on the Ancestry.com blog, Amy Johnson Crow offers some research resources for researching your African American Civil War ancestors; and also from the Ancestry.com blog, Ancestry DNA Advances Exploration of African American Ethnic Origins: Couples Genetic Science with Historical Records.
  • It appears Mocavo is closer to launching their Online Transcription project.
  • Missed WDYTYA? Live in London? Experience it on their YouTube Playlist for their conference.
  • The Families in British India Society (FIBIS) has transcribed and compiled a searchable index for the British Library's online collection St. Helena, South Atlantic -- Banns of Marriage 1849-1924. [What a great idea for a society to do -- transcribe and compile searchable indexes for free online family history-oriented collections.]
  • From Claire, on Irish Genealogy News: some transcriptions of parish registers in the Diocese of Armagh are available free online now and the newly launched History Press Ireland has an introductory special until tomorrow, February 28th.
  • City directories can help to place your ancestor in a time and place between census records. And they definitely can reveal some very helpful clues. On The Ancestor Hunt, Kenneth offers 8 Places To Do Online City Directory Research.

Other things that might interest you. Maybe. Maybe not. But maybe.

  • On the New Mexico Genealogical Society blog, Robert reminds readers who are in Farmington, New Mexico, and who have a library card just what kind of research benefits the Farmington Public Library offers to cardholders. And? It's a good reminder for everyone. What kinds of research benefits does your local library offer you?

  • The February issue of the Federation of Genealogical Societies' The Voice Newsletter was published yesterday. Not already signed up for this free informative FGS e-publication? You can sign up now. [Disclaimer: I am newly appointed to the FGS Board of Directors, serve as the Chair of the Outreach Committee, and I'm a member of the Marketing Committee. Thusly, I'm biased. Please make your own decision on this. =) ]
  • Have research interests in Kentucky? On the Archives.com blog, Amy Johnson Crow outlines some of the vital records that Archives.com, a subscription-based site, has for Kentucky researchers.
  • On Fishwrap, Laura introduces the latest non-US newspaper databases to be added to Newspapers.com -- Irish Newspapers! They've also been adding other US-based newspapers as well.
  • Have research interests in Texas? You might want to check out this membership drive contest the Texas State Genealogical Society has going on. It ends March 2nd but the prize is fabulous! [Disclaimer: I'm on the board as Director for Communications at TSGS. Thusly, I am biased. So make your own decision on this. =) ]
  • Ancestry.com teases readers and Ancestry.com users with more control over searches of their online subscription-based collection.
  • Yesterday, USGenWeb volunteer contributors uploaded 175 files of various records and images from various counties in the following US states: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, and Virginia. Remember: this is a free site!
  • And lastly, Family Tree Magazine named 40 genealogists as Social Media Mavericks to follow in 2014. I'm pleased to announce that I and my genealogy-related Pinterest Boards made the list. Thank you to Family Tree Magazine and the author of the article Lisa Louis Cooke. And? Thank YOU for reading and pinning. Without you, I would just be writing words and pinning pictures for myself. Where's the fun in that? Congrats to all those who were included on the list.

  • Okay, these look cool. While Montage Book is still in invite-only status right now, what they do show on their website is really pretty cool. So I signed up to see if it will work the way they explain it will work. The photo books look very well made. And their images sold me. I think these would make fabulous family history gifts for reunions, holidays, etc.
  • Do you have any ancestors who went to Indiana? The Indiana Genealogical Society has recently added to their membership-only online databases. [Scroll down after clicking.]
  • On Genea-Musings, Randy investigates what obituaries are in Family Search's Indexing project right now. Is something you need coming up? Can you help?
  • Do you use Gmail? Lifehacker offers some guidelines for protecting your account.
  • Have New England ancestry? On Vita Brevis, Anne shows how to use the NEHGS catalog from home.
  • Yesterday, Ancestry.com added 3 databases to their collection for Canada and California. Then they updated 9 existing databases for England and Sweden.

  • Studying the area your ancestors lived in can yield more clues about your ancestors and their lives. More one place studies have been added to the Registry of One Place Studies.
  • Genealogy Trails volunteer contributors have recently added more records for various counties in the following US states: Alaska, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
  • And USGenWeb volunteer contributors uploaded 255 files of records for various counties in various states, but due to a technological hiccup, the only ones listed are for Florida and Kentucky. Visit USGenWeb.org and search for new records via the state you are researching in.

Other things that might interest you. Maybe. Maybe not. But maybe.

  • It's not always about the facts.
