  • 49 states. 21 countries. 200+ classes, events, & interactive activities. THE PIONEER WOMAN. 10,000+ attendees expected. Family Discovery Conference. Rootstech 2014. Will I see you there next week? [THE PIONEER WOMAN! I just made her Pot Pie last night. And her Pork Roast with Apples and Onions is a favorite in my house. Made it last week. Again. Yum. Family stories, genealogy, technology, and food. I'm there. Coffee in hand.]

  • Speaking of FamilySearch.org, record indexes and record images were added to their online collection yesterday for China (Collection of Genealogies); Colombia (Valle del Cauca); Germany (Bavaria); Ghana (Accra); Italy (Campbasso & Napoli); Netherlands (Zeeland); Portugal (Beja); and for the US: District of Columbia; Minnesota; New England; New Hampshire; New York; Ohio; Texas; West Virginia; and the 1860 US Census.

  • Have Irish ancestors? On Irish Genealogy News, Claire gives some great news about the Valuation Office trying out a Cancelled Books viewer. It's only onsite viewing at present. [This is great progress, IMO, and I'd even be very excited about the email service that is mentioned as being a possibility sometime in the future.]
  • For OneNote users: When on the go, use OneNote's Web App.
  • For Evernote users: Evernote Sync is now 4 times faster than it was.

However, due to a technological hiccup, the only ones showing on their report for yesterday are for the US state of Florida. So expect the rest tomorrow. Or if you can't wait or haven't ever used USGenWeb, then head on over to USGenWeb and search via the state you are researching.

Don't Forget This When Looking at FamilySearch.org Collections on Ancestry.com

Don't Forget This When Looking at FamilySearch Collections on Ancestry.com via 4YourFamilyStory.com. #genealogy
With the recent announcement by Ancestry.com of including indexed records from FamilySearch.org in Ancestry.com's online database collections comes convenience for Ancestry.com family tree users. Additionally, FamilySearch.org gets added exposure out to Ancestry.com users out of the deal.

And you might not think that's a big deal, but I can't tell you how many times I come across Ancestry.com users online and in-person who have never heard of FamilySearch.org.

But there's one thing the user -- the researcher -- needs to remember to do now. And it's critical for research progress or even success.

And I've mentioned something related to it before. Remember when I wrote you could profoundly affect your research if you just did these 3 things?

Well, when it comes to these repeated [and, really, that's what they are] collections from FamilySearch.org on Ancestry.com, the collection description is not listed on Ancestry.com.

Don't Forget This When Looking at FamilySearch Collections on Ancestry.com via 4YourFamilyStory.com. #genealogy

Nope. Instead there's this itty bitty link all the way at the bottom. And it's really the most important thing you can do on this page besides the ability to search the collection.

Don't Forget This When Looking at FamilySearch Collections on Ancestry.com via 4YourFamilyStory.com. #genealogy

And if you're not careful, you'll miss it.

It should really be a button. A big red button.

Because this fabulous link takes you to the description of the collection sitting over on FamilySearch.org's Wiki. And that's where you can find out more about what the collection contains before looking in it.

Don't Forget This When Looking at FamilySearch Collections on Ancestry.com via 4YourFamilyStory.com. #genealogy

So you know just what you're looking at.

So you can make some headway on your research.

Make some profound headway in finding your family stories.

Happy Profound Researching!

9 #Genealogy Things You Need to Know This Morning, Thursday, 23 Jan 2013, via 4YourFamilyStory.com. #needtoknow
  • Win a free pass to Rootstech from Sue on Granite Genealogy.
  • On Olive Tree Genealogy Blog, Lorine asks, "Have New Netherland Ancestors?" If you do, then you need to check out the resource she highlights.
  • On the Family Tree Magazine Blog, Diane explains something very crucial to being successful at searching on FamilySearch.org. Check it out.
  • On the Journey to the Past blog, Brenda pretty much sells anyone who reads this blog post on why they should be, at the very least, using  the NEHGS website whether they are a member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society or not. But? By the end of the blog post she had me wanting to be a member and then I realized I already am which left me GOBSMACKED. This post is THAT good and the NEHGS is THAT good.

  • FamilySearch.org and Billiongraves need your help. Can you or your genealogy society help perhaps?
  • Fishwrap, the official blog for Newspapers.com who wins the unofficial and totally made up by me award for the best blog name EVER,  highlights the North Carolina newspapers they recently added to their online collections.
  • On the Ancestry.com blog Paul highlights some of the non-New York collections they recently added to their online collections. [These are collections that were added before they added all the indexed collections from FamilySearch.org.]
  • Then yesterday, Ancestry.com updated 2 existing non-US collections yesterday for New Zealand and Sweden. [These are, of course, AFTER they added all the indexed collections from FamilySearch.org. I really hope you're not confused about all this which is why I'm trying to point it out. =) ]
  • And then USGenWeb volunteer contributors uploaded 70 files yesterday for various counties in the following US states: Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.

Other things that might interest you. Maybe. Maybe Not. But maybe.
