10 #Genealogy Things You Need to Know This Morning, Sunday, 3 Nov 2013, via 4YourFamilyStory.com. #needtoknowGenealogy Need to Know, Sun, 3 Nov 2013
  • Dear Myrtle gives us this week's upcoming genealogy webinars, hangouts, and chats.
  • A great point about citing the 1921 Census of Canada was brought up in the Evidence Explained forum. Not surprisingly, EE gives a very thorough answer on what to do.
  • On her blog, Genealogy Canada, Elizabeth informs us of a place to find York County, Ontario pioneer mini-biographies as well as a place for FREE Ontario, Upper Canada and Canada West research collaboration.
  • FamilySearch.org shares with us about their new indexing system. Are you helping FamilySearch.org index their records? {I heard quite a few people like to index records for counties and other locations their ancestors lived in. What a positive outlet for impatience, eh?}

  • While using Dropbox to collaborate with others on our research is handy, it helps for everyone to understand the etiquette. On Makeuseof.com, Justin Pot shows us how not to be a jerk while sharing files in the cloud.
  • The Evernote blog shows us how to stay on task with the apps Awesome Note and Evernote.
  • Android devices with the latest Android OS, KitKat, will ship with Google's QuickOffice.
  • USGenWeb volunteer contributors uploaded 132 files yesterday to county GenWeb sites for the following U.S. states: California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Did they upload something you've been needing for your family history research?
  • Have piles of photos and documents of your ancestors that you need to get digitized and don't feel like scanning them? There's a support group for that. Join us for Sunday ScanDay today at 3pm Central Time in the Sunday ScanDay Facebook Group where we scan together virtually for just an hour. Some of us check in, chat, and share what we're scanning. Some just use our group as a reminder. We'll see you there!
  • And? I won a Photo Album Raffle Basket at the Texas State Genealogical Society's 2013 Conference this past week. So that means a lucky {and totally random} subscriber to my monthly Genea-Tech Newsletter who resides in the United States will win a Photo Album Basket that includes {as far as I can tell from peering through the plastic}: a photo box, 2 photo albums, 1 family tree photo frame {with some random smiling people in the frames}, several cute different-sized frames, a Preserving Your Family Photographs book by the Photo Detective Maureen Taylor, a digital photo frame, & a USB flash drive {all pictured above}. So make sure you subscribe below to be able to have a chance to win it this week. {And, yes, the October issue of the Genea-Tech Newsletter is running a bit late. However? Free Photo Album Basket.}
Daily Resource Spotlight: The Lomax Family Collections at The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, "...encompasses more than 100 collections and includes 700 linear feet of manuscripts, 10,000 sound recordings, 6000 graphic images, and 6000 moving images... created by Alan Lomax, John A. Lomax, Sr., and many others..." and contains many documents, folk songs, photos, manuscripts, etc. beginning in 1933. And 2 of their online collections from the Lomax family include over 400 photographs which are available as a searchable online collection from mainly southern states including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Texas, and Virginia and a searchable online collection of textual transcriptions of songs and field notes from the Lomax family's southern trip in 1939. Was your family ever interviewed, recorded, or photographed by the Lomax family?
Happy Researching!
