7 #Genealogy Things You Need To Know This Morning, Friday, 11 Oct 2013, via 4YourFamilyStory.comGenealogy Need to Know, Fri, 11 Oct 2013
I hope you have a large cuppa something strong. Here's today's need-to-know with a side of sass...

  • On the Venture Beat blog last night, Christina Farr revealed that former Ancestry execs have been working on a new venture called YouWho that seems to solve some of the current problems with online {or cloud} research collaboration. {However, I'm continually shocked by how many genealogy companies don't control their PR better, and this is a perfect example of what happens when you don't do a good job of it. Surely a developing venture would not want phrases like "...would kill to own it..." and "...sell content at premium prices to people who feel an emotional connection to it..." to describe and promote their business. Or maybe that's just me.} But what's interesting about this idea is that YouWho will need contributed content from users to make this work. And the video seems to explain things better and since the article IS on Venture Beat, it IS written for their audience which includes investors. So? Watch the video. What do you think? Good idea or not?

  • Got this announcement in my email yesterday: "Mocavo Introduces Free Forever..." Basically? Mocavo's basic search has always been free and, apparently, it will remain so. And they changed the name of their premium service. However, this is what the researcher needs to know: Take a look at their records collections. Great breakdown of what they have by location but you have to scroll down for that.  {Where have we seen *that* before?}
  • Need help with interviewing your family members for more information and family stories {and secrets}? MyHeritage has a free webinar coming up next week to help you out with that.
  • Warning:Facebook is getting a little less private with our timelines. Bad for those who post just about anything on their Facebook Timeline and good for those of us looking. {Maybe.}
  • Do you have German roots? This is a new crowd funding project for a documentary that explores German roots in America -- I Heart Berlin. The video trailer looks cool and having German roots myself, I think this would be a fun documentary to watch.
  • Findmypast.co.uk has added Electrical Engineer Apprentices {1902-1934} to their collections. {I wish the US findmypast's blog and Facebook page operated like the UK's versions. It's so helpful in keeping up with what's new. If it's easy to understand the benefits and features, I'm more likely to spend money. Or is that just me?}
  • Holla! Ancestry added 2 new collections and updated 3 already existing ones. Get your research ON folks. It's Friday.
Happy Researching!
