Today's things
9 #Genealogy Things You Need to Know This Morning, Saturday, 9 Nov 2013, via 4YourFamilyStory.com. #needtoknowGenealogy Need to Know, Sat, 9 Nov 2013
  • Having problems researching an orphan ancestor? On the New York City Public Library blog, Carmen Nigro shares with us how to research orphans for genealogy.
  • If you are in the Houston area this morning, after their annual business meeting, the Clayton Library Friends organization will be having Trish Taylor, PhD, LCSW, speak about researching adoptions for genealogy. Click here for more details. {I'll be there taking notes -- back row nearest to the coffee. ;) }

  • In honor of Veteran's Day, Billiongraves.com has a giveaway.
  • On the Makeuseof.com Blog, Christian Cawley explains to us how to use or disable the Windows 8 touch keyboard.
  • Genealogy In Time helps us to understand about Julian Calendars and Gregorian Calendars while doing genealogy.
  • On The British GENES Blog, Chris informs us of some Victorian London maps that recently went online as well as some historic magazines and journals that also went online.
  • Have Irish ancestry? The free digital November issue of Irish Lives Remembered is now available.
  • Speaking of Irish ancestry, new Armagh Presbyterian Church Records are now available online on rootsireland.ie.
  • Yesterday, the USGenWeb volunteer contributors uploaded 174 files for the following U.S. states: Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.
Have you tried this research resource?
Locating and contacting a genealogical society or historical society in the location your ancestor once lived {or did anything in, really} can greatly increase your chances for research success. Be patient with these volunteer groups. Many are in transitioning phases trying to see just how they can be of service to the general public using technology. However, many have publications, surname lists, family group sheets, memoirs, pedigree charts that just might help you find that one clue you've been needing to solve your family history mystery {or to help you find living family members}. Use this handy dandy list of genealogical and historical societies on CensusFinder.com. You can also look to state genealogical & historical society websites {using Google} as well as the Federation of Genealogical Societies' website to help you find a local-to-your-ancestor's-residence society. And, of course, joining that society -- even from afar -- or making a small donation can help their organization continue to offer their services and enhance their offerings via technology. Win-win.
