Today's Things

9 #Genealogy Things You Need to Know This Morning, Wednesday, 5 Mar 2014, via 4YourFamilyStory.com. #needtoknow
  • The NGS 2014 Conference will be livestreaming 2 of their conference tracks from Richmond! It is for a fee and you can choose 1 or both. Get the preregistration details from their conference site. [Personally, I'm excited about the 2nd track. I've some Virginia roots I need to tend to as my DNA matches with Virginia roots are a-callin'.]
  • On Upfront with NGS, Anthony explains how to read those "unreadable gravestones" the correct way in order to protect the gravestones. [Handy.]

  • One way to learn more about how to research your ancestors is to read about genealogy bloggers researching theirs. You can pick up research strategies & repository tips from them. If you're researching your African-American roots, here is a handy list of blogs from the African-American Genealogy & Slave Research [AAGSAR] group.
  • If you're in the Houston, Texas area, or thereabouts, consider joining Clayton Library as they celebrate Women's History Month with classes to help you discover more about your female ancestors on March 15th. [Hat tip to Claiming Kin.]
  • Have Mexican roots? On We Are Cousins - South Texas and Northeastern Mexico blog, Moises highlights a book that covers vital information for the Martinez family of the Revilla area (Ciudad Guerrero).
  • Do you have ancestors who participated in the War of 1812? Maybe? Well, the popular FGS War of 1812 Webinar Series from last summer which featured J. Mark Lowe, CG, FUGA, and Craig Scott, MA, CG, is available for free for a limited time.
  • On Genea-Musings, Randy goes over the new FamilySearch Family Tree Census Source Tracker feature.
  • Yesterday, Ancestry.com added 2 new databases for the Czech Republic.
  • And USGenWeb uploaded files of various records for various counties in the following US states: California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Virginia, and Washington.

Other things that might interest you. Maybe. Maybe not. But maybe.

Thanks for your mention of AAGSAR bloggers. Your statement is so true, one learns about genealogy research by reading what others have gone through. I never thought I'd be a blogger but I am because of this group & their support.
