Today's Things

Cue Lionel Ritchie's "Easy Like Sunday Morning." It's Sunday. It's Morning. [At least here in Texas.] It's time to sit back, sip a cuppa, and just be easy. Tomorrow's another day. And there'll be more news tomorrow. [I know because I'm holding it back for you. And then the overflow is going in this week's Genea-Tech Newsletter. You're welcome.]
  1. You've probably muttered before, "I wish I could talk to my ancestor, or I wish they could talk to me." But? They are talking. They've stories to tell, you see, because the records talk. And they tell stories too. Miss Peggy illustrates this beautifully in this poignant story found in this record on her blog Always Anxiously Engaged.
  2. USGenWeb volunteer contributors uploaded 189 files for various counties in the following US states: Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Virginia, & Washington.
  3. Plan your learning & exploring this week: Dear Myrtle has this week's upcoming genealogy webinars, hangouts, and chats. [Oh my.]
  4. And get your "stuff" scanned today in Sunday ScanDay, a Facebook Group that "meets" virtually for one hour [Just one.]  and scans together every Sunday afternoon at 3PM CT. Join us? [Remember: Your stuff isn't gonna scan itself. Unfortunately. Because I'd be on that plan if it existed.]

Want more? Did you forget a day this past week? Maybe?

I actually want people to email me and network with me, so I find this feature a benefit. Developers of new products and services for our industry find me on Google+. And people ask me questions via email. So it works for me and my goals. However, this may not be your cup of tea. To each his own.]

  • And more of the story of the destruction of the records in Franklin County, North Carolina that was first mentioned on this blog on December 12th, is coming to light. [Lots of fingers being pointed...here, there, everywhere. But? IMHO, we're all responsible. How are we going to learn and apply the lessons learned about preservation and outreach? Because, no doubt, there are multiple lessons to be learned here. And much, much more we can all do. This is a foreshadowing of good and positive stuff to come out of this for you to be excited about. Just so you know. Be excited. ;) ]

  • The British Library has 4 new collections they've placed online with over 100,000 images.
  • Whoa. Looks like we have another genealogy-related show in the midst -- DNA-related this time. However, before jumping in on this one, you should probably be aware of the story and situation CeCe Moore reveals on her blog Your Genetic Genealogist, "Artificial Insemination NIghtmare Revealed by DNA Test." Something to keep in mind when delving into genealogy, but especially into DNA-powered genealogy.
  • Interested in writing your family history? I can think of no other better time and place than the Armchair Genealogist's annual Family History Writing Challenge. With her help, you can do it.
  • FYI Texas Researchers: The Texas State Library and Archives has anew URL address.
  • Yesterday, Randy's Tuesday's Tip on Genea-Musings was a good reminder, or, a good tip for those who are new to researching. Are you forgetting about or using these family trees when you research online?
  • Yesterday, FamilySearch.org added new or updated existing databases for Brazil and the US states of California and Vermont.
  • Ancestry.com added 2 new databases to their online collections for Germany and the US state of Pennsylvania.

Other things that might interest you. Maybe. Maybe not. But maybe.
