Today's Things

7 #Genealogy Things You Need to Know This Morning, Sunday, 9 Feb 2014, via 4YourFamilyStory.com. #needtoknow
It's Sunday. [The one after Rootstech, no less.] It's time for easy. Cue Lionel Ritchie, please.

  • I agree with Amy Coffin on her blog We Tree Genealogy blog. That was the BEST seat in the Rootstech house. And? Other conferences MUST do this.
  • From the FamilySearch blog, here are more details on their offering a free account access to their strategic partner sites for LDS members.
  • Not using Evernote but want to? Here is a quick tip from the Evernote blog about how to start.
  • On Genea-Musings, Randy spotlights a genealogy-related podcast. [Want more genealogy & family history related podcasts to listen to or want to know what a podcast is, I wrote about that recently.]
  • Explore your online earning opportunities for the upcoming week: Dear Myrtle's G+ Hangouts, Webinars, & Online Events.

  • Yesterday, USGenWeb volunteers uploaded 394 files of records, information, photos, etc. for various counties in the following US states: Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia.
  • And join us today at 3pm CT for Sunday ScanDay, where we virtually "meet" and scan & chat together on a Facebook Page. And by "scan" we mean any scanning-related activity. We'd love to have you!

Did you miss a day this past week? Maybe?

  • Did you miss the 9 genealogy things you needed to know yesterday?
  • How about the 6 genealogy things you needed to know Friday?
  • And how about the 12 genealogy things you needed Thursday?
  • Maybe the 9 genealogy things you needed Wednesday?
  • What about the 10 genealogy things on Tuesday?
  • Perhaps the 8 things on Monday?
  • The 7 last Sunday?

Today's Things

9 #Genealogy Things You Need to Know This Morning, Saturday, 8 Feb 2014, via 4YourFamilyStory.com. #needtoknow
  • I spent a lot of time in the Federation of Genealogical Societies' booth here at RootsTech the past few days. And I learned yesterday that there are some really grateful and generous people in this world. And I also learned there are quite a few people out there who do not realize what a pension record is (much less a pension application); how it can help them in their research; how to access them; and that the War of 1812 pension application files are being digitized and made available for free on fold3.com but FGS needs your help to do it. And in case you didn't know, then here are some quick links to what you need to know: Preserve the Pensions; "Genealogical Records of the War of 1812" by Stuart L. Butler from Prologue;  US War of 1812 Pension Records from FamilySearch Wiki; and War of 1812 Pension Application Files on fold3.com. Are you using pension records, and specifically, the War of 1812 pension applications, for your research? Do you have any ancestors who may have fought in the War of 1812? Have you looked to see if possibly one of your ancestors applied for a War of 1812 pension? If you're here at Rootstech, then come on by booth #725 and let us show you examples of what can be found in a War of 1812 Pension Application File. And? Not only do we have free stuff for you like an earbuds holder, we have 2 raffles [small donation to the Preserve the Pensions required for entry] -- 1 Dell Tablet and a Subscription & Software Package that includes a 1 year subscription to Ancestry.com, fold3.com, Newspapers.com, and Family Tree Maker Software.

  • Are you absolutely totally completely new with technology? For example, do you know what a browser is? Do you know how to use a mouse? Sounds like simple stuff and if you're reading my blog, then, duh, of course you know these things, but? Do you have a family member who doesn't know? Then perhaps this free downloadable guide from GenSearch might be helpful for them. You could download it and print it out for them.
  • So. Findmypast added PERSI to their online collections. Take a look at this terrific write-up from Amy Coffin on the We Tree Genealogy Blog about what PERSI is, how to use it, and more. Have you ever used PERSI before? Will it be something that will entice you to sign up to findmypast.com?
  • Need to transfer some home movies? Check out Super 8 Film.
  • Have unidentified photos alongside photos that are identified? Think those people might be related? Try PhotoFacematch and you might find out it may very well be that they are related. Or likely to be related. You never know. [They were also a Rootstech Developer Challenge Finalist.]
  • Rootstech announced yesterday the winner of their 2014 Developer Challenge -- Saving Memories Forever.
  • Looking for a safe place to archive, organize, and share your genealogy files? You might want to check out FileGrove.
  • Recently Genealogy Trails volunteers uploaded records, information, & the like for various counties in the following US states: Oklahoma, North Dakota, Illinois, California, Texas, Maine, and Tennessee. Have you looked at Genealogy Trails yet to see if they have something you need for your research?
  • And USGenWeb volunteers uploaded 412 files of records, information, & the like for various counties in the following US states: Virginia and Michigan.

Other things that might interest you. Maybe. Maybe Not. But maybe.

  • Did you miss the 6 genealogy things you needed to know yesterday?
  • Digitally organize your research with Evernote [VIDEO].
  • Here are 15 iPad apps for genealogy and family history.

  • In her keynote yesterday, Annelies van den Belt announced findmypast.com's new app, Capture, is coming soon.
  • I spoke with Mike Davis yesterday and he showed me the new design for StoryPress that will be going into beta soon. With its Pinterest-like design and interface, interviewing your family members will be a wonderful experience! While it can be used as a standalone product, a user will be able to upload their interviews to their FamilySearch Family Tree if they desire or are using that platform. It will also be available for iOS as well as the web with Android coming out later in 2014. Stay tuned for more details.
  • I spent some time in the Demo Theater yesterday listening to short tech & research presentations here at Rootstech. Really good stuff. While I'll go more in-depth in separate blog posts about each one, here are links to them so you can take a look: Treelines, Rootspoint, and Backblaze. And if you're here at Rootstech & have your laptop with you, go to the Backblaze booth in the Expo Hall and they'll upload Backblaze to your laptop and give you a year worth of service for FREE. [I use Backblaze myself and love it.]

  • From Claire on Irish Genealogy News: Rootsireland.ie added Waterford death records to their online collection.
  • USGenWeb added 3 files yesterday for the US state of North Carolina.
  • And yesterday, Ancestry.com added a new database for New Zealand for those who have a World Subscription.

Other things that might interest you. Maybe. Maybe Not. But maybe.

However, you do not have to be a member to take the course.]

  • Not going to Rootstech this week? Follow all the news and goings-on at the conference in a beautifully visual way with this RebelMouse Page for Rootstech. Bookmark it today. You can have it open on one tab (or screen if you have multiple monitors) while you watch the 15 free livestreaming sessions on another tab (or screen). And then if you prefer the faster action of just Twitter updates, then you'll want to add a 3rd tab (or a screen if you have a 3rd or put it on your tablet or smartphone) of a Rootstech Twitter Search Amy Coffin created. And she has more tips for those watching Rootstech from home on her blog.

  • From EducatorsTechnology.com, here's "A Handy Dropbox Cheat Sheet for Teachers." And it's pretty handy for researchers. [Like you.] And it's free. =)
